Sting Ray’s debut at CKI Championship racing included a top ten “first time” CKI racers finish. Finishing 5th, Sting Ray qualified for 5 paid entries to the Region 6 IKF events in the Northwest. If you visit the photo gallery you will notice Sting Ray’s WildKart racing with the number “16” rather than his usual racing number “3:16”.
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
– John 3:16
After a short night Saturday began with clear skies and ok temperatures. Sting Ray and Larry spent most of the day chasing correct chassis and jetting combination’s. When not totally engrossed with chassis set-up and carburetor jetting they were addressing unrelated problems from car keys to food. Needless to say, the day was a learning experience.
Sting Ray’s WildKart was clearly outclassed on the long straight-aways in TaG where Niel Alberico and others pulled away at will on the long Newcastle straight-aways. In Comer Cadet Sting Ray was competitive and hoping for a good showing on Sunday.
Sunday was another great weather day for Indiana in the spring. After the long Saturday, a very short night, maybe things were going to look up. That wasn’t the case in TaG. Several karts were so much quicker then Sting Ray and the rest of the field that on the straights they made passes at will.
In morning qualifying Alberico ran away from the field. Sting Ray’s weekend in TaG was shaping up to be a great learning experience with little chance of being competitive with the field’s top five. This proved to be the case as Alberico sweep the qualifiers and championship, winning one race by more than 6 seconds.
Sting Ray’s debut in CKI Comer Cadet proved far more interesting. The separation between the fastest karts and Sting Ray was just a few 10′ths with the leaders running neck and neck.
The first qualifying race Sunday morning found Sting Ray finishing in the top five. And the Prefinal race found Sting Ray improving to 4th place setting up the possibility of a top five finish in Sting Ray’s first CKI Championship Series race.
Final Race Write-up:
Rather than three, the lead group was four as Stoia joined the fight for the 12-lap Final. Smith led from the drop of the green with Manthei, Corbitt and Stoia falling in behind. The four ran nose to tail the entire race, never making move. Corbitt and Stoia lost a bit of ground to the top two but regained the lead draft within the closing laps. Coming to the checkered, Smith chose the inside line down the long final straight with Manthei going to the outside. It looked as if Manthei could pull out the move from the outside however Smith went into the final corner deep and held the position. Corbitt ducked down to the inside of Manthei as he went wide on the exit to slide into second with Stoia getting by as well to steal third. Contact on lap 11 between Rocha and Camden Donaldson (Birel) ended their fight for the fifth spot in the last corner, moving Robb up to the position at the checkered. Smith’s win helped put him to the top of the event rankings to be named the event winner with Rocha and Corbitt completing the podium.

With a 5th in class showing for Comer and no chance of catching the leaders Sting Ray and Larry headed for Indianapolis to catch “the friendly skies”. Tired from successfully navigating the challenging 1st CKI Championship Series weekend and looking forward to their next race.
